Movie Review: Drive

Drive with Ryan Gosling is a movie I’ve wanted to see since it was in theaters in 2011. I knew the movie was going to be entertaining but it was actually much better than I expected and I plan on watching it again. Ryan Gosling plays the part of a loner who is a driver. He works as a mechanic, a stunt man, and he’s a getaway driver for criminals on occasion as well. The movie is set in present time but it also has this kind of retro vibe to it as well. I felt like I was watching a video game. It was exciting and suspenseful.

Drive has a beginning, middle, and an end. The one thing I found myself wanting to know more about is Ryan Gosling’s character. He’s not exactly a drifter but he’s definitely not a loner. How did get that way? What happened to him as a kid? These would be questions with interesting answers. I watched Drive on Netflix and recommend if for a home movie night. If you like mob movies, I think you’ll like this flick as well.

Movie Review: Disconnect

 

 

Disconnect is a story about three families struggling to remain connected (partially due to technology). It has several stars including Paula Patton, Alexander Skarsgard, Jason Bateman, Hope Davis, and Michael Nyqvist.  Stories that are truly multiple stories in one such as Disconnect can be a little confusing. Each story was connected rather seamlessly. I felt that the film was really well done. Disconnect is not a feel good movie. It’s dark, it’s sad and it’s real. My only problem with the film was Alexander Skarsgard’s character’s decision to go a little bit further than perhaps most people would have to solve his problems. I don’t want to give the film away but if you are interested in some good drama then I suggest it. There aren’t any pyrotechnics or 3D animation. It’s refreshing to see a film that really focuses on the actors and the characters they portray.

Now, onto a rant about the implied topic of the film which is that technology is having an adverse effect on our lives. I understand where people who argue this point are coming from, however, I don’t fully agree with it. I love technology, blogging, television, music, you name it. I even worked online as a teacher prior to transitioning into the health field. People need to manage their use of technology or else it can and will take over their lives. It’s that simple. Technology is like any other hobby that people indulge in. Even though technology is big part of my life, it’s not all that I do and I don’t let it negatively impact me either. That’s enough about that! I give Disconnect 4.5 out of 5 stars.



Movie Review: Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor

The message behind this movie was great. The timing was great for me because I’m learning so much about trust right now. Yes, I’m a Kardashian fan (say what you want but those ladies know how to hustle and I respect that). If you’re a Tyler Perry Fan You won’t be disappointed.

The film is about an ambitious, young, therapist who is also a young wife. She fell in love young and met her husband when they were six. She found someone else who excited her. Something different. Let’s just say different doesn’t always mean better. I’ll leave the rest for those who are going to see the film.

I was surprised by the message of the film and honestly didn’t expect the film to be so heavy. Tyler Perry has done some heavier work in the past but this is no Madea comedy. Even if you’re not a fan of Tyler Perry, the message in the film is still worth experiencing (even it’s on HBO later). There are worse films in theaters without any lessons to learn at the end of them. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars because I wanted to know more about some of the characters. I wish the film had a little bit more depth, it would have been interesting to know more about the other characters’ past lives. I enjoyed the film overall and don’t felt like I got ripped off. It’s good entertainment that gives you food for thought.
